Making Card Games Documentation?

I apologize if I got the category wrong here. Felt like the most fitting.
Also, going to be a semi-long post. Sorry.

I am set on what I want to do for my first game on UE. The only problem I feel like I have is that there isn’t a lot of coverage on the genre. My goal is to make a CCG. I have been in the planning/testing phase with it for a year now and I am settling on a variation I am happy to start working with. Now it’s just a matter of getting a prototype into UE and I am at a loss of where to even start lol.

To clarify on the category here, I am not new to UE itself, I am just unfamiliar with 2D games in UE. There are platformer tutorials everywhere, but other than having a 2D environment, it’s of no use to me as far as I can tell. So I am just looking for any material that can help me get started. I don’t need a step-by-step start to finish guide. Just something that will get me going in the direction I am after.

I will note I am aware of and even have the CCG toolkit from the Marketplace. Not going to lie, as cool as it is, there is a lot about how it is set up and functions that I simply do not like. Specifically with how cards are made. Additionally, the Documentation is not entirely clear throughout the whole project so as someone who is still fairly new to UE in general (been playing around on it for a year or so in my free time), it was not as helpful as I would have hoped for.

Hey, @TheEdgeOfNight! Have you tried contacting the seller for more insight? They do have some docs that cover their product, what you are look for are the “Adding Cards to your Set” section and onwards. Here is also a great video that covers the basics like how to edit cards using CCG toolkit.

I have not contacted the seller as of yet.
I am aware of both, but my primary discontent isn’t the documentation (though it was part of it), it is mainly the setup. The way the cards are implemented (not the abilities, the physical cards) was one thing I did not like. I’ve played around with adding my own cards to the Toolkit, but the method they used is, imo, way more complicated and difficult to work with than I wanted to go with. The images are broken into three parts (last I recall), and without very specific size proportions, importing a custom visual is nearly always distorted.

Additionally, though probably easier to change, are the boards. The samples are nice, but there are a lot of changes I would need to make to better fit the CCG I have in mind. The collection of extra boards in the game are useless for my needs too.

I am going to note that it has been several weeks since I was last able to get on and meddle with it, but that was also part of my frustration and is less to do with them. Trying to work around adjusting the Toolkit and learning the toolkit feels more time=consuming/demanding than just making it from scratch and not having to worry about the potential damage I could cause by deleting the wrong thing or disrupting the toolkit’s ability to function.

Maybe I am wrong and the Toolkit would be the better option. I can at least reach out to them and ask about a more refined way of adding artwork/custom card designs. If I could get that problem resolved, then all I would have to worry about is the board setup…
