Hey all,
I recently got to play a PS4 game called ‘That’s You’ with my friends.
It’s essentially a party game that runs on the PS4, but it also requires all the participants to download & install an accompanying mobile app, through which each player is actually playing (answering questions, drawing stuff, etc.).
So the ‘main’ game runs on the PS4 for all to see, and as long as all the players were connected to same network - it felt like we’re playing one seamless game on multiple devices.
I came up with an idea for a game that must be built the same way (a ‘main’ app running on a console/PC, & an accompanying mobile app used to approach each participating player individually).
I’m fully aware that it’s a major task, and I have no plans on tackling this anytime soon, but I’m dying to at least have a general architecture in mind. I just want to flesh-out my notes so I may at least have an initial plan for when I’m actually able to pull off something like this.
I understand that it involves the actual development of two separate games (the main app + the mobile app), and as far as I can tell - UE4 doesn’t have any inherent issues or limitations that may prevent such ideas from happening.
On the other hand - Sony’s called this feature PlayLink, which leads me to think there may be more involved than just some intricate networking code…
So, generally speaking of course (& all theoretical) - how would you approach such a project?
What things would you recommend I keep in mind during development?
Was anything similar ever made via UE4? Are there any relevant tutorials on the matter that I might’ve missed?
And of course - does UE4 have any inherent limitations I’m not aware of that may make such a project impossible to develop?
Thanks!
