Making a game for my portfolio

I’m dedicating this summer to working on my portfolio and this might be a stupid question but I just need to make sure.

If I am not publishing the game I make, and it is only going to be used for my portfolio, is it ok to use art assets from websites like spritersresource and opengameart in my game? I would be planning on giving credit.

Are you an artist? Programmer? What do you want to do?

I would say that so long as you are not deceiving anyone into believing you made those art assets, it’s fine. Meaning, you give credit where credit is due. <- Just my opinion on the matter.

I wanna go into either level design or scripting

If you wanna do level design / env artist
3D modelling is a must have skill

However if you know how to do 3D work and just wanna save time i think its fine
as said
“so long as you are not deceiving anyone into believing you made those art assets,”

Just read the Copyright policies on those sites and act accordingly.

There are a lot of places with free to use assets you just have to search, they usually ask for credit.

3D modelling is not recquired for a level designer but for a level builder, i would suggest you to quote artist you take assets from and if you don’t publish your games there will be no problem i guess

My advice is to be careful with this plan, every game that doesn’t go through a heavy polishing stage looks and feels terrible. If your plan is to make a game for your portfolio while the other job candidates go safer routes you might end up working 100 times as hard as them for a less impressive portfolio.

I’m not a level designer but if I remember right the last level designers portfolio I saw was just fly-through of levels, not actual games.
