Greetings @Aimbokker1 !

Welcome to the Unreal Engine community! :medal_sports:

That’s so sweet of you to make something special for your GF on V-Day! It’s great that you took the initiative to learn something new and use this experience to make a video for her using UE!

We’d love to learn more about your project - what challenges did you face? What about this project was a learning experience - what techniques did you use?

Ultimately, how did your GF react when she saw the video? We look forward to your story!

Thank you for welcoming me! I’ve actually been a part of the UE community for a while (2015 or so?), and been in a few prior game jams (you guys were even nice enough to feature mine back in 2021 briefly) but I don’t think I actually ever posted on the forums themselves? I uhh… I’m not proud of how long it took me to realize how tags worked since I haven’t used an ACTUAL forum since Game Maker forums in 2003 LOL.

In terms of challenges, I had never used the in-engine recording methods such as Sequencer. And besides proper netcode, and 3d modeling, Niagara (and particle systems in general) was something I had pretty much struggled with the most in UE across the years. So I figured this would be a nice way to try my hand in scratchpad stuff for particle systems, since I’d basically not used that to any notable extent prior.

When she actually finally saw it, she really liked it. Although due to IRL and other distractions, I actually did this the very last minute, the day of Valentine’s Day. Was pretty nerve-wracking because I was speedrunning learning entirely new things under a very tight time crunch, worse than the pressure of any game jam I’d ever been in haha.

I don’t expect to win or anything, and mainly did this for her, and to learn. But I am thankful for Epic giving me the opportunity to both better myself as a dev, and express how much I care about her, all at once. Have a great day!
