MacBook Pro 2017 vs iMac 5K Retina 2017 for Unreal Dev?

Hello!

I’m a game developer on Unreal Engine 4, and I need to upgrade my computer. However, I can’t decide between the New MacBook Pro 2017 (released in 2016 - received minor Processor upgrade in June 2017), or the iMac 27" 5K Retina 1TB 32GB RAM Early 2018 model?

I bought a $2,800 PC windows computer for Game development, and it was the most useless piece of junk I’ve ever seen. Unreal Engine hardly ran on it, and the battery was shocking in every aspect. I bought a $2,000 ($800 cheaper) MacBook Pro (still using it for Unreal) after that, and It ran Unreal Engine amazingly! I was actually shocked! So after that, I decided I’m only sticking with the Mac lineups. I’ve had multiple PCs over the year, and they were always bad (but I put up with it because I thought they were best for Game dev) - where as the Macs just feel so well optimised and always run heavy duty programs with zero issues.

So, which Mac do you think would be better? I’d love to hear your help and advice. I personally think that the iMac 5K would be better, but I could be wrong!

Thank you everyone!

iMAC: Buy iMac from $1299 - Apple
iMac 2: iMac 24-inch - Apple
MacBook Pro: MacBook Pro - Apple

If you were having trouble with a $2,800 PC that sound like you purchased something not designed to support games well. There’s lots of expensive laptops that are built for portability but don’t have something like a dedicated graphics card (because they use more power and take up space)
For example, you can get a Razer laptop for that or cheaper that does have a very good graphics card (since it’s built for gaming).

As far as Macs go, Macs aren’t built for gaming either, but the iMac would be the better choice since it offers a dedicated Radeon graphics card, the Macbook only uses the integrated Intel GPU which is not good for graphics intensive software like UE4.

It is not called PC Master Race for no reason…

Yeah haha I thought that as well. However, after multiple chats to Support centres, I was told that my computer (PC) was built for game development, but Unreal Engine was too powerful for it. One guy in support told me to switch to a Mac hahaha!

But thank you so much for you help and advice! I think I’ll go with the iMac over the MacBook! Thank you
