Freight Train Railway System is a powerful and easy-to-use toolkit for creating realistic railways, freight trains, rail yards, industrial areas in Unreal Engine. Build anything from simple background rail lines to large interactive railway networks with moving trains, switches, stop points, crossings, bridges, tunnels, industrial scenery. With spline-based track creation, automatic snapping, terrain deformation, customizable trains and efficient optimization, it is well suited for games, simulators, cinematics, and large open environments.
First of all, this pack is just what I was looking for - often packs on the marketplace does not factor in switching the rails and the actual animations for it, just overlapping meshes which ruins the aesthetic. So thank you for getting that done in this one!
Quick note which I hope is a simple fix, the BP_Track_Switch does not currently have an option to switch to Wooden Track like the BP_Track. Is this something that could be done in a future update?
Well, I thought of wooden Switch a lot. That’s piece of work but this is possible. I choose not to add wooden Switch because sometimes it is possible to have concrete Switch among wooden Tracks (and vice versa).
But probably I will add wooden switch in future updates.
Detailed Switch mesh is vital for good looking railway! I played some railway simulators and even saw one SIMULATOR without Switch mesh! Simply overlapping tracks. This is sad for simulator..
Greetings Iyoshko - I’m evaluating options for a project I’m working on. I like the functionality of your Freight Train Railway pack, but have a few questions that I would appreciate having answered so I can make the most informed decision possible.
1. How customizable is your system? Is it feasible to develop new locomotives and cars compatible with your system? What about the track - could I replace the meshes used in creating the track with my own custom ones?
2. Have you considered creating a combination pack that features all the content from both your Intercity Train with Railway and your Freight Train Railway system packs?
3. If the answer to question 1 is “yes,” then how flexible is your system with regard to new content creation? Is it possible to create, for instance, a 2-6-6-2 steam locomotive with animated external valve gear? What should I know about when it comes to developing Train Controller-compatible train assets from scratch?
4. Would your Railway System be capable of allowing players to place their own tracks and trains during gameplay?
5. Can the UI controls be customized so they are different for different locomotives (for instance, one set for steam locomotives and another for diesels/electrics?)
Yes, theoretically you can replace meshes of wagons and track with no problems. Bogies use WPO for wheel rotation, so keep that in mind.
IC and Freight railways are very different and cannot be combined. Instead, in future I will release passenger train system, but based on tracks of Freight pack. It will feature highly detailed wagons and train stations.
If you create meshes similar to meshes included in FTRS - it will work. Steam loco mesh can be added, but making and animating wheels and stuff - it’s up to you.
No, that is not supported. You will have to add gameplay track placing logic by yourself.
Sure, you can create several UI widgets or make one, but customizable.
Hello Iyoshko, thank you for the timely reply! Your answers are most helpful, and bring a few more questions to mind. I hope it’s not too much to ask. First, does your system support a wagon coupling/decoupling function for shunting or slow goods (AKA local freight) operations? Second, what would the prospects be for building narrow or broad gauge rail networks based on your Freight Train with Railway pack? Once again, thank you for your help!
Thank you for your patience answering my questions, this is most helpful! Just a thought - coupling/decoupling (plus the ability to spawn a train without a locomotive) might be handy features to add in a future update.
