low quality drop in Material editor

I am having a problem in UE5.2 materials editor. Windows 10x62 RTX 2080 with 6GB VAM and 16GB RAM in puter.
When I open a material it immediately drops quality and I cant work with it. It happens with every setting from Low to Cinematic regardless. Despite showing detail in the viewport and in and rendering output, the actual Material Preview editor window does this weird thing where it opens and shows it high resolution then immediately drops to low resolution and this makes any depth map texture unworkable. (note: realtime viewport rendering is checked, still doesnt sort it out)

(Two images below should show what I see the moment it opens, then what it does within less than a second. After that I can close the material editor and go out and it remains in low resolution regardless if I close it and come back in.)

the above is about a millisecond later. though it still renders out higher quality.

as I said I can be on cinematic and it still does it. Any suggestions to resolve this?

okay this looks like a bug. when I click on the preview and set it to a cube, after that it fixes it and retains the proper view in all other viewports until I close them and come back in again and have to repeat that process. weird.

EDIT: spoke too soon. this only worked on some, not on others. still having the problem.
