Low-Poly "Survival" Game Assets/Game/Project

Hello, my name is . I’m and I’m a game development hobbyist. I’ve been learning game development on and off since I was . I was always interested in learning how games actually worked and one day decided to start researching. Well, here I am, five years later, and after a few years of messing around in Unity I found that Unreal Engine had become free. I instantly made the switch.

While I haven’t ever really made a full game, I decided it would be fun to work on a long project. With this project I’m not really aiming for a ‘real’ game and aiming more for a platform for me to test ideas, work on my artistic skills, and simply see what I can do in the engine.

The art style I chose to go with is the ever-increasingly popular low-poly design that seems prominent in many indie games lately. I am a huge fan of this design and the fact that it’s generally less complicated to do helps.
While I am familiar with C++ programming (as well as C# and Javascript from my time in Unity), I found that Blueprints are really amazing. If I ever encounter any issue where I may need to use C++ I am prepared to do so, but from what I’ve read online there are very few situations where using C++ would be absolutely necessary.

I decided to start off this project with camping assets. Don’t ask why I chose this, but it was the first thing to come to mind so I got to work. While there isn’t much right now, just having this thread here will help motivate me to continue my work.

Right now I only have a few rocks and campfire meshes, which I decided to call the “Campfire Pack”. They may require some tweaking later on, but for the most part I’m happy with what I have right now. I’m planning on working on certain “packs” for each facet of this project, which I’m wanting to post on the marketplace at one point. Now, time for a few screenshots and less text.

Logs and rocks made in Blender. (I plan to add more variants)

The meshes seen above assembled into campfires as a single mesh. I thought about assembling them in the engine itself but decided to assemble them as one single mesh in Blender instead so the game only loads one mesh for each campfire instead of multiple meshes. Also doing this allowed me to add the ashes as seen at the bottom of the campfire.

I know that doesn’t seem like much right now but I’ll be hard at work on more assets whenever I get more free time. I hope you enjoy this little endeavor I’m taking on and please post any criticisms below. I honestly don’t even mind if you are mean to me just tell me what you think is wrong and I’ll do my best to fix it if I find it to be an actual issue.

Small update. Added a “heavy duty” water bottle. I feel like this bottle design fits the camping theme as it can hold a lot of water and it looks durable. Anyways, hope you enjoy!

Right now I’m looking into particle effects for the campfire. More updates soon!

Good fun stuff to start out with. What’s next? How about a canteen or a canoe? Maybe a pair of binoculars?
