Low FPS (5-10 FPS) in Unreal Editor 5 despite system requirements

Hello,
I have met all system requirements for Unreal Engine. I’m using Unreal Engine 5.4.4.
I have 16GB RAM, 1TB hard drive, Windows 11, 3.4GHz processor (Quadcore 800 MHz).
I have DirectX 12 on my computer and the Direct3D option is enabled.
To the best of my knowledge I updated to the latest graphics driver.

I can use hacky ways of increasing the framerate like using Android Vulkan preview, or dropping the resolution/scalability really low. But why is the framerate so incredibly and the editor so laggy in the first place, despite the fact that I meet all the requirements? How can I fix this?

System Settings:

DirectX info:

Direct3D is enabled:

Graphic card info:

so you only have intel graphics right? if it is, as you can see VRAM is quite less as UE utilizes good amount of vram or to frame in a better way, a default third person itself takes i think 1 to 1.5 gb of vram while the project runs

I see thank you!
Vram was not mentioned in the unreal engine requirements, but that makes total sense that it runs so slow then!
I will check if it’s possible to change the graphics card for my PC model.
Would you happen to have any recommendations for a graphics card?

What do you mean by PC model? Is that a laptop? If so, you cannot add more VRAM. (You could get an external GPU but I wouldn’t recommend that) Other than that, 16GB RAM also wouldn’t be enough, assuming you want to make use of UE5’s capabilities. It should be at least 32GB. It also matters if it’s DDR5 or DDR4. If the project you have in mind isn’t that advanced, you can consider using UE4. You’d still need to have a discrete GPU rather than an integrated one though.

If you have a desktop, it would be a good investment to get a GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM, preferably 16GB. 8GB would also suffice (I mean for me it currently seems to be doing the job but it can be limiting for larger projects) however it will be even more limiting in the near future. But you won’t be able to use UE5 with a VRAM that’s less than that. (I personally didn’t try it but that’s what I learned from others online)

Hope these help :innocent:

I have heard people use Unreal Engine 5 without any issues with only 8GB RAM.
I’m not trying to use Unreal Engine’s newest 3D technology nor build incredibly complex, detailed or large projects, so I’m looking for the minimal requirements to run it smoothly.
I’ll keep 8GB Vram in mind, thanks.
(and it’s a mini PC box, not a laptop, but you can swap out different graphic cards in laptops as well if they’re adjusted to the model)

Like I explained in my previous post, even though the required RAM capacity is 8GB, you won’t be able to use UE5’s capabilities that are actually the reasons to use it. It would require at least 32GB to do that, and the officially recommended RAM capacity is 64GB.

That’s not true :slightly_smiling_face: They’re soldered. I did mention external GPU’s too if you’re referring to that, but like I said, I wouldn’t recommend.

I already suggested it but just as a reminder, you can consider using UE4 instead of trying to use UE5 with a low end hardware.

You’re right, I was thinking of swapping RAM which is oftentimes possible. :slightly_smiling_face: However there a few laptop models that use MXM graphic cards that you can swap out, like the Alienware 17x r3 or the Clevo p150em.

even me too bought the rtx 3050 not knowing about vram requirement of unreal engine and for a couple of months, UE5 just used to crash … direct blue screens and i had no clue until a person casually shared that i might be out of vram, then everything made sense … i9, 32gb ram, 650w psu, 4k monitor but 3050 rtx nvidia … that’s where i messed up :joy: , so currently reduced the resolution of monitor, max fps reset to 60 and currently doing good in development without crashes.
