Hello, I need some advice on character creation for my video game I am working on, Its a MMORPG, so far I’ve bought substance painter and a few things for my game that are pretty good investments, however I need a a simple character creator for my game, Looks like my options are Metahuman? Character creator 4? or i found a freelance guy that will do my entire character creator for UE5 + all blueprints for real time save, for around 1000USD, now if i spend 300$ on the program character creator 4 i am assuming i could make my own blueprints and and make own character creator for my video game?
My last option, is taking the time to model my own model in blender but that will take me at least 1-2 months to do as unexperienced at character modeling.
So, as a beginner game dev what’s the best route for me to do, my original plan was modeling my own model and using morph targets to make a simple character creator in UE5 that saves the characters as a blueprint i could also use for NPCs.
I’m really just looking for some overall advice on this topic as i don’t want to waste money on software if it wont work for me.
Hey, just wanted to update this post with a picture of the art style I’m going for, after doing some research today i think ill just try to model all my own stuff, i don’t have the money to pay people to model this stuff for me unfortunately and i want my game to look and play a certain way otherwise I’m not making it, i don’t want to make a ■■■■ game. Any advice is apricated, but i think I’m stuck modeling on my own.
there is MetaHuman creator (provided free by Epic) to accomplish realism, which you have the option of exporting to Maya project files to then edit.
if you don’t have a Maya License then you can import the character into Unreal using Quixel Bridge to then export as FBX to take into something like blender (Free open source) to do modifications there.
I know that blender has Humanoid model templates (as a free official add-on) that you can modify to your liking, but you would need to still texture them yourself, though that style looks kind of flat texture so it “shouldn’t be too hare”
you could also use a post-processing effect to soften some of the geometry from a realistic model to create something closer to the softer texturing you are going for.
Hey thanks for the reply, for textures i use adobe substance, with a mix of post processing shade(maybe), I wasn’t really going for super realistic so i avoided meta human, but i think ill take a look into it, i always felt like meta human wouldn’t be optimal for a pvp game, but apparently it is?
MetaHuman creator has LoD options for the model, so you can get a more simplified geometry if you need higher performance, and Unreal has the ability to dynamically swap LoDs almost on demand.
but you always have the ability to pull the entire thing into a 3D modeling program to simplify it down if need be.
aii thanks, ill take a look at doing that, and maybe editing a model if that doesn’t work out, ill probably spend the time to model the character for my character creation blueprint if option one doesn’t work out.
