Looking for a technical artist to work closely with for a VR project

Hi everyone- I’m a VR developer who will be starting a contract soon, and am looking for talented technical artist to work with. The arrangement I’m hoping for is a bit unconventional, but I think it could be an awesome experience for both of us. I come from more of a programming background, but I’ve been really wanting to expand my skillset into technical art for a while now. I’m so fascinated and excited by the potential of art and VR, and want to grow as much as i can in this area to be able to express and share my visions in as powerful and free way as I can…

Anyway- this contract is to develop a VR game for hospitalized children, (basic mechanics most likely will be a rails shooter for GearVR/ [and possibly daydream], but there’s lots of room for flexibility and creativity within that structure) and there’s a decent budget, with the possibility of more funding for other games if this project goes well. What I would really love for this project- the main MVP of which is scoped for about 2 weeks to a month, is to spend at least part of this time working directly, in person, with the technical artist- and not just creating the art, but actually learning in depth about the process behind what you as the artist are doing- the programs, the techniques, etc. I have some experience with maya, zbrush, photoshop, and substance painter/designer, so would be excited to keep working with those programs- and I’d be super stoked to learn new programs as well. I mostly live in the bay area, but have been a bit of a nomad lately and am down to go pretty much anywhere in the world if the opportunity feels right (i.e. feels like we have a good connection, you have an awesome portfolio, etc). Alternatively, if you are a nomad and want to chill in the bay (or elsewhere) for a couple weeks during the project without worrying about the logistics, I can take care of that and we’ll work that into our budget agreement.

I realize this may sound a bit weird to some of you, but I know from my own experience with learning new skills, especially technical ones, that I learn so much better and faster when I’m working directly with people in real life as opposed to remotely. I also think this will result in a better final game as well. The timeline for the game relative to what the MVP calls for feels quite forgiving, so we’d have plenty of time to create a great experience while honoring the educational component as well.

Please reach out with a bit about you and your portfolio if this interests you! You can email me directly at ericrius1 at gmail. If your technical skills seem like a good fit for the project, the next steps will be to set up a video chat so we can get a feel for each other to see if spending a few weeks together is something both of us would be open to.

Have a great day!

Eric
