Locked out from Epic Games Launcher after adding Plugin to fresh install of UE 5.6

Hi there,

we were planning to switch from UE 5.5 to 5.6 today. After installing UE 5.6 on my machine via Epic Games Launcher I tried to add the one plugin we are using via button press: Asynch Loading Screen.
The Launcher crashes instantly and will crash on login on every restart again.

  • updated all drivers and Windows 10
  • reinstalled Epic Games Launcher cleanly and still the same
  • could replicate the exact same behaviour on my second Epic account
  • now I am locked out from both accounts and Epic Games Launcher will crash instantly when restarting

I ran out of ideas what I could try to keep going or at least revert this state. Has anyone encountered something similar already?

I had a similar problem with Engore Procedural Dismemberment. Reinstalling the launcher did not solve it.

Checking through your log, I believe these two errors are critical to the issue:

LogSelfUpdateService: Error: ExecuteEpicGamesUpdater: “C:/Program Files (x86)/Epic Games/Launcher/Portal/Binaries/Win64/EpicGamesUpdater.exe” queryinstallation - failed with exit code: 4

An exit code error 4 usually signals a problem with the Epic Games Launcher (or Updater as well) accessing or downloading the game, often due to launcher or installation file issues.

LogInit: Error: WinPlatform::FixLauncherInstallDirectoryPermissions: SetNamedSecurityInfo failed with 5. Could not set new DACL on the directory.

An access denied error with code 5 typically means the application lacks the necessary permissions to access or modify a file or folder, often due to restricted user rights or another process using the file. This issue can prevent the Launcher from updating or modifying itself, relating with exit code error 4 .

This boils down to a permissions conflict in your system. To resolve it, we need to grant the proper rights to UE. To do so, please locate your UE editor exe file in your install directory, right click on it, select “Properties” > “Compatibility” tab, then check the “Run this program as administrator” box, apply and close. After adjusting permissions, try launching the Epic Games Launcher again.

If the issue persist after these changes, I would suggest a full uninstall/reinstall of all Epic software:

  • First, uninstall the engine, launcher, asset packs, etc
  • Next, open the registry directory HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Epic Games\Unreal Engine\Builds, and delete any build entries
  • Finally, delete the folders %userprofile%\AppData\Local\UnrealEngine and %userprofile%\AppData\Local\UnrealHeaderTool
  • After that, no elements related to UE should be left in your system
  • Now, reinstall UE launcher from scratch, and only add the latest version of the engine
  • After the process is complete, open UE and test adding the plugin again

Just crashes, wont let me open the launcher.

Today, after Epic Launcher received an automatic update, I started experiencing the same problem. removing and reinstalling the launcher did not solve the problem. While trying to find something in the settings, I accidentally came across debug logging. When I enabled this option thinking that I could understand the problem in detail with additional debug logging, Epic Launcher did not crash. I am continuing to work now. I will get by like this until Epic understands the problem and fixes it :smiley:

Where/how can I access that when the launcher crashes?

Epic Launcher was crashing in 8-10 seconds in my situation. If it’s the same on your PC you can quickly go to settings. There aren’t many options there. You’ll see in de middle of preferences.

Mine crashes after 0.8 second :wink: Only so much I can do. Guess I’ll have to wait for a fix?

I can open projects, just not the launcher.
I read somwhere that deleting the folder epic in Programdata/ will solve it but I have 9 GB there.
Is that safe? Maybe better to wait.

Same here, it seems to be related to plugin installations, the log mentions trying to install Metahuman 5.5 and that’s when the error above happens and crashes. This has locked me out too.

No previous solutions worked. Deleted and reinstalled the launcher, nothing. Deleted and reinstalled all engine versions: nothing. Deleted all various appdata folders: nothing. Created another account on another pc to see if it was platform related and the crash still happens. Every time I try to install a plugin to ANY Engine version it’s over and then the launcher crashes everytime I open it. At first I thought that was an 5.6 exclusive problem, but now it happens with every other engine version and the launcher is crashing after seconds without the possibility of doing nothing. Nice.

Same here. Tried to install Quixel Bridge for UE5.6 and now the Epic Games Launcher is unusable. All steps on the Epic site to fix it fail (webcache, start as admin, reinstall, 
).

Worked through all the steps and reinstalled Epic Games Launcher afterwards, but it will still crash instantly after logging in.

To be more precise: The Epic Games Launcher keeps crashing without having any engine version installed.

Worked. My launcher crashed too quick so I had to add a non working fake proxy to force it into offline mode. In offline mode I was able to enable that debug logging.

I can confirm. Retried with another plugin and now it’s crashing again (also the debug log trick only works for the first time it seems).

Yes, it only worked once, and now it back to crashing again. I downgraded from UE 5.6 to 5.4.4, yet this problem exist. Only way to get rid of the crashes was to delete Unreal engine and all epic game files from appdata local, program data, program files etc. After doing that a clean installed helped but as soon as I tried to install the plugin again, the crashes started again..
