Linux (When + Thank You)

When might the Linux editor be ready? Does anyone here have a good sense on the timeline? Might it be release-ready in one month? Three? Six? I’ll help develop it in the future but I’m not yet intimately familiar with the UE source.

Really, I can’t thank Epic enough. It’s been said many times. Let’s say it again. You get it. You make the source code available. Thank you! The culture shift you’re helping to accelerate is palpable. Prior to this I was stuck in Unity-land. It’s a land in which the prevailing sentiment at the mere mention of topics like engine source code, Linux support, indie access to full features, more openness, and big ideas in general is often flooded with eye-rolls, whys, bah-if-you-don’t-like-it-go-elsewhere, and disregard from users and admins alike. I tolerated it for obvious reasons. Unity is incredibly useful, and was indisputably so for an indie. Then came UE4. I could finally go elsewhere. And now I needn’t look back. It’s very liberating.

I’m making a list of parts for a new Linux system. It’ll be ready for action. These are good times. Much of the software potentially in my pipeline embraces Linux (e.g. Maya, Houdini Indie, Blender). Though I’m bitter that others (e.g. Allegorithmic, Quixel, Pixologic/Zbrush 4R7, etc.) remain stuck in the past, tied to the culture and whims of closed platforms and corrupt companies. Epic could stand to move away from leaning on Visual Studio so much in their default support and documentation but, at least, they’re headed in a healthy direction overall. I understand the convenience at the moment.

The day I finally remove Microsoft and Apple from my personal life is the day I’ll scream into the ether, ‘HABOUJIIII!’ (…think Braveheart.)

If you’re on IRC, you’ll find some guys on the #UE4Linux channel on Freenode. Amigo- is 3DLuvr, and RCL is also on there. Some other people working on the Linux editor, like Whammy, also post there.

Thanks, good to know.
