Linux support in the future?

Really hoping for Linux support at some point- a quad-socket Opteron motherboard doesn’t exactly fit with the CR hardware specifications.

Thank you, can’t wait to try out the program!

Hi Jacob Nowatzke

for now it not on short term list, but let see in later stages of development.

Rc is created from start to offer substantial performance win even on single CPU setup so no need for extra multicore CPUS. But you will see speedup on the quad socket AMD mobo. Do you own one ?

Right now what I am using for Agisoft PS is AMD FX-9590, 2x HD-7850 (for OpenCL), and 32GB DDR3 RAM (limited by my motherboard to around 27GB). I’m taking photographs through a microscope I’ve built and the subject for modeling is about 1/4 the size of your smallest fingernail.

I am building (or possibly was building, pending on my tests with CR!) a quad socket Opteron (4x 16-core @ 2.3GHz) which has room for plenty of expansion regarding memory (what was restraining me in PS). I’ll be putting at least 96GB of DDR3 memory on it and I hope that will do well. I also have an AMD HD-7990 I hope to put to use if RC comes out with OpenCL support soon.

have big fingernail !!!
for RC you will need at least for now NVIDIA GPU card. even gtx 560Ti
later this year we will support even AMD cards…

Not need to have dual-quad setup. good clocked ( overclockedd ) i7 CPU can outperform the quad socket setup !!
So in end not need to put to much money on HW.
The new i7 on X99 chipset support up to 128 GB RAM
but even 64 GB is enough for say 10k x18mpix imgs
And later we plan introduce “home cloud” so the speed will be not a issue

I also have an AMD HD-7990 I hope to put to use if RC comes out with OpenCL support soon.
yup its on the list to be supported, but will see our speed in action so 2 GPUs (GTX 970 overclocked ) are mostly enough up to 10-20k img dataset

For the moment, I am absolutely required to have Nvidia GPU? I do not own one, so I’m hoping I can get away without it? Thank you for your insights.

Hi jnowat

yes for now need Nvidia card.
look for even GTX560Ti, it should be for few buck (20-50 usd )

HI

I don’t own the product but have been exploring software solutions to help me reach my goal. This software has particularly caught my eye. Unfortunately, I lack the requirements of having a card with cuda cores since I have in my system a higher end Radeon card.

Although, I did catch wind of a company that was able get cuda working on non-NVIDIA gpu’s without a degrade in speed. The article is here:

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/224599-gpu-computing-breakthrough-cloud-rendering-company-claims-to-run-cuda-on-non-nvidia-gpus

Perhaps this could be a possibility to implement into later codes? Or perhaps taking advantage of the new libraries that AMD has put out recently.

Just thinking aloud.

Hi Bob Evangelista

Yes we are aware of this press release but even the article say

Cloud rendering company claims to run CUDA on non-Nvidia GPUs

So nobody have seen it in action or how they do it, so for now its very speculative how it impact performance and etc.
We have it on the hot-list to add the support for AMD and other devices this year.

If have a AMD powered system, then get even some old GTX560Ti ( can be brought for few bucks ) and start to use RC on your system.

FYI I had to buy Windows just so I could use RC… glad to hear you are thinking about a linux version which would end my constant switching between the two operating systems.

+1 linux version.

even if it was a non-gui “render” node version.

windows 10 updates with long processing times is a pretty bad combination. and adds more risks than necessary.

I don’t trust windows not to try and update and restart pc half way through processing. (I have lost work due to this in the past). even going through and changing settings. windows 10 will keep nagging about it.

any news on this? Switching to Ubuntu soon…
