Linux Preview — Sign-in button does not open the browser

Description:

When I click the “Sign In” button in the Epic Games Launcher Linux Preview, nothing happens. The launcher appears to wait for the authentication window to open in my web browser, but Chromium never launches.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Launch the Epic Games Launcher Linux Preview.
2. Click “Sign In”.
3. Wait for the browser authentication window to open.

Expected behavior: Chromium opens the Epic Games authentication page so I can sign in to my account.

Actual behavior: No browser window opens, and I cannot sign in.

This may be related to browser launching or authentication callback handling on Linux.

Linux distribution: CachyOS (Oct 2026)
Desktop environment: KDE Plasma 6.7.5 (Wayland)

The bug should be fairly easy for them to fix. They are bundling an old version of xdg-open that doesn’t work with Plasma 6.

Summary The Epic Games Launcher AppImage does not open a web browser when the user clicks the “login” button on a system running KDE Plasma 6 (Wayland). The launcher appears to do nothing and logs no errors. The root cause is an outdated bundled xdg-open script (version 1.1.3) that only supports KDE_SESSION_VERSION 4 and 5, and silently exits on Plasma 6.
