Licensing questions regarding forbidden content

Hi everyone,

I’m developing a game set in Medieval Europe, and I’m aiming for a high degree of historical accuracy, even when dealing with uncomfortable aspects of the period. This is leading me to some questions about the boundaries of the content guidelines, specifically regarding “Hateful or Abusive Content” and content related to self-harm.

My game includes the following elements, which I want to ensure are permissible within the context of historical representation and a mature-rated experience:

  • Slavery: Slavery was a reality of the period, and I plan to depict it in the game. My intention is not to glorify or promote slavery, but rather to present it as a part of the historical setting. Players will not be able to actively participate in the buying or selling of slaves as a primary gameplay mechanic, but it will be present in the world and in the narratives of some characters.
  • Discrimination: Characters of different ethnicities and origins (e.g., Ottoman characters) may face prejudice and discrimination from other NPCs. This is intended to reflect historical attitudes, not to endorse them. One key background character, presented positively, will come from a group that faces this kind of discrimination, showing the player the impact of these attitudes.
  • Brutality and Mature Content: The game will contain violence, nudity, and mature themes appropriate for a medieval setting. This will include potentially disturbing content, reflective of the harsh realities of the time.
  • Child Abuse (Implied): I’m planning a questline that touches on the topic of child abuse. However, I intend to handle this very carefully. Direct depictions will be avoided. Instead, the abuse will be implied through dialogue, environmental storytelling, and player inference. The narrative will clearly present this as a horrific act. My goal is to evoke an emotional response and highlight the vulnerability of children in this historical context, not to sensationalize or exploit the topic.
  • Depiction of self-harm is not planned, but in world of violance, there might be allusions to it in some of side quests, but as something “bad”

My primary concern is to ensure I’m interpreting the guidelines correctly. I understand that content promoting hatred, abuse, racism, or discrimination is prohibited. My goal is not to promote these things, but to realistically portray a historical period that, unfortunately, included them.

Could I get some clarification on whether this approach, with a strong emphasis on historical context and mature handling, is likely to be considered a violation of the content guidelines? I’m particularly concerned about the distinction between depicting something negative (as part of a historical setting) and promoting it. Any guidance on best practices for handling these sensitive topics within the bounds of the license agreement would be greatly appreciated. I want to make a compelling and thought-provoking game, but I also want to respect the rules and community standards.

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.
