Licensing for non-game indie film makers after 2024

I guess a lot of folks may have already heard about Tim Sweeney’s announcement about licensing changes for non-game developers at Unreal Fest, this article does a good job of summarizing the changes he talked about Unreal Engine to change pricing model for non-game developers in 2024, Tim Sweeney compares it to Maya and Photoshop | Game World Observer

So I understand licensing doesn’t change for game developers, so won’t affect indie game developers and those making less than $1M in revenue.

My question is: will this impact those of working as independent film makers though, working on hobby film / cinematic projects in UE? I hope Epic Games clarifies the licensing situation for indie film makers soon, but wondering what the community thinks about it.

i make films and animations for fun, then post it on yt and social media for free…i haven’t made any money from them so if i were to have to pay a license fee to use UE for making films, i’d probably stop using UE.

for big to mid sized studios that use UE for films or archvis etc, I can understand the need for a license fee but not for solo indie hobbyists.

in hindsight tho, something like this was bound to happen.

Good news, Tim Sweeney did post a X / Twitter reply clarifying this, hopefully this will continue to be the case next year and beyond, and indies like us can continue to make films in UE.

Which he had posted in response to this
