It’d be nice if the engine would at least let you part-run or open a project, when reliance on plugins is minor / cosmetic…

Epic have been leaning on 3rd party plugin devs from Rama to Low-Entry etc for a long time. Functionality like theirs could already be part of the engine. It sometimes feels like new BP functionality has stalled. Tim Sweeney keeps saying AR / VR are over a decade away. Yet Epic is aggressively pushing ahead with them, at the expensive of more basic things.

The classic apologist’s response is, you can always use C++ - can’t you? Speaking as a past C++ dev, I don’t feel that’s the answer. Not for solos and small teams anyway. Just getting a game done, involves lots of different ingredients / processes coming together to perform right. If your game is fairly standard, why should you have to use both BP & C++. It feels like learning 2 different languages!

It’ll be interesting to see how Lumberyard deals with this… I want Unreal to succeed, but I also want BP to match the hype that Epic staff imply in Twitch streams, that games can be made solely using BP. But if you can’t save out a simple table at runtime, or reorient split-screen at runtime, or other examples like this… Then how accurate is that…???

But at what point then do we become developers? If someone else hands you everything and you never actually learn how those things works then what? Pretty sure community members are able to contribute to the engine. Maybe the LE and Rama plugins should be added but it would be on the authors to submit those things to the engine on git and would be at their discretion.

If we want more as a community then we should start putting effort into getting the changes into the engine not complaining that we weren’t handed everything how we want or expected. There are people right now who are currently working on getting changes added in places that are lacking. Why not join them and speed things up?
