Launcher Failing... Again

I’ve been using the Unreal Engine since 2017. Complaints about the launcher being slow were always common. But I have never seen the launcher consistently fail to download as it has been prone to do lately.

I’m trying to install a version, any version, of UE5. But the dropdown list is not properly populated. All versions are listed as .0 (image attached). From my desktop, I know that I cannot DL a version until that dropdown list is properly populated. What that cause could be, I have no idea.

I’ve been waiting over eight hours for this download to happen.

All checks in Troubleshooting are green (nice feature, btw)

Launcher version 19.1.4-49337254+++UE5+Release-Distro-5.5

Running as Administrator

Digging a bit deeper, I found these messages in the logs as well:

[1222/235739.168:WARNING:dns_config_service_win.cc(712)] Failed to read DnsConfig.

don’t run as admin.

you can also try using the https://assetmanager.studio/ it’s not official tohugh.

Thank you for that information @nande

I have a download in progress on Launcher v 18.12.2-47783409+++Portal+Release-Live

I found this v18 on Softronic. Someone posted a previous thread about this. I linked to it on a previous thread of my own.

Bummer of a workaround.

yikes. beware when downloading from softonic or other stores like that. they tend to bundle hidden things.

glad it works.

i’ve seen that issue pop around in other places.

You are correct. I’m trusting the DL too much. I absolutely hate this process. I need to get work done.

How can we be sure the AssetManager is safe?

I am having the same issue & situation where you had. And having extensively invested & developing games using UE for more than 5 years.

Had tried all various methods & solutions. Since Sept 2024 I had my 1st installation problem just after the newly merger of FAB. But I did managed to solve the problem after 2 months on reading the previous solutions in the forum. However, by using the similar solution previously- by leaving the Epic Launcher to run over a day, the Epic Launcher would some how ‘find itself’ a way to communicate thru with the UE engine Server. Unfortunately for this time, I had no luck of able to install any UE5 engines using this way. I really can’t understand something that simple as reinstalling a new UE game engine could be such a difficulty & trouble.

And none of the Official Unreal Technical supports could ever come into assist or by just putting it right for so long. Amazingly, very surprised.

Due to the recent crashes were ways too often beyond decently able to developing any games, I had decided to uninstall the UE5.5 for the newly UE5.7. Wrong decision indeed, and this is my 2nd time facing the same problem -unable to download/install any UE engines. I am also half way through my projects. Many of my projects have to be dealyed over & over again…

Hope, we could have some very good miracles (or fixes) after the comming 2026 New Year.

~ MERRY CHRISTMAS & A GREAT NEW YEAR 2026 ~

  1. there’s a lot of people using it for linux as it’s the only launcer.

  2. people talk directly with the dev on discord

  3. it might be opensource i think

  4. it download binaries directly from epic, so it doesn’t bundle anything else.

in any case, it’s always safer to download ams from the author’s site and not other sites.
