Since just before 4.11 came out of preview I’ve had the launcher and the 4.11 editor freezing. The 4.10 editor was not freezing although the launcher had been.
There’s no hidden model dialogues off-screen (although this is still a constant problem, please check screen bounds) and no way to recover the editor or launcher. It never crashes, it just sits there, non-interactive.
Is there anything I can send that would help debug this?
Hello Antidamage,
I have a few questions for you that will help narrow down what issue it is that you are experiencing.
Quick questions:
- Could you try Verifying your engine (Can be found in the drop down menu for the launch button)?
- Could you provide your dxdiag?
- Could you try opening the launcher as administrator?
- Could you check your memory usage?
I had verified my install at the time, it passed with no problems.
I’m running on 64GB of ram. I checked and I hadn’t run out. In addition I’ve been disabling things like dropbox when I work as my projects are in there.
here’s the DX Diag but it’s skipped directshow as I ran it over teamviewer:
DX Diag
I’ll try again running the launcher as administrator tonight as it takes an hour or so for the issue to occur. Thanks!
So I kept launching everything as administrator and eventually it froze several times over the weekend. I’m at a bit of a loss as to how to diagnose the issue.
One thing that might be relevant: it only ever seems to happen when UE is in the background.
Hello Antidamage,
In reference to the launcher portion of this issue:
In order for us to offer the best support, we have recently modified the process for how Epic Games can help troubleshoot your Launcher issue. Please visit http://help.epicgames.com/ for technical support, here you can find information and solutions for common issues, as well as a contact form if you still need additional assistance.
In reference to your editor freezing:
Quick questions:
- Can you reproduce this issue in clean project?
- If so, could you provide a detailed list of steps to reproduce this issue on our end?
- Are you using any plugins or other devices when the freeze occurs?
-
It happens in the launcher or a a clean project
-
Load launcher/editor, put launcher/editor in background, wait.
-
No other plugins or devices,
The issue is identical for both the launcher and the editor, so it seems odd to handle them through different processes. Is this the best Epic can do, throw up hurdles? I’m not raising this issue for myself, I’m raising it so you can have crash-free software.
Hello Antidamage,
I have tried running few tests with my engine running in the background all day and I have not run into this issue on our end.
Additional questions:
- Have you tried a reinstalling the engine?
- Could you try temporarily disabling any anti virus software that may be blocking UE4?
- Could you look over this documentation A new, community-hosted Unreal Engine Wiki - Announcements - Epic Developer Community Forums to see if any of these may be conflicting with your install of Unreal?
Yes, early on in 4.11 I needed to do a complete reinstall, launcher and everything. The problem persisted through that.
No anti-virus software beyond windows defender, but I’ll try disabling some stuff that’s running.
I’ve noticed something else: every so often UE will jump to the foreground for no reason. It might be tied to auto-saving and I’ve just got this hunch that it might also be something to do with Oculus Home or the DK2. I’ll try removing all of that as well.
I also haven’t seen the issue in the last week although I haven’t been using UE at that location as much.
Hello Antidamage,
With the additional information could you also let me know what runtime it is that you are using for the oculus?
Hello Antidamage,
We have not heard back from you in a few days, so we are marking this post as Resolved for tracking purposes. If you are still experiencing the issue you reported, please respond to this message with additional information and we will offer further assistance.
