Oregon is such a beautiful state and I was greatly inspired by Opal Creek and the Hood River in building this environment in Unreal Engine 5.2. I’ve dabbled with the pathtracer but this is the first fully rendered project I’ve used it in. I also used a PCG graph to populate the space with rocks and foliage. I didn’t use any off the shelf assets and created everything myself. For the camera motion, it’s a mix of hand-held virtual camera shots and traditional keyframed motion. Thanks for watching!
Hey there @PSunset ! Welcome back to posting with us here on the forums!
This scene that you’re showcasing now is probably one of my favorites. It reminds me of a camping spot I used to frequent in the Rocky Mountains but I think you capture the different environment quite well.
There is this serene untouched beauty you’ve managed to capture is phenomenal. Will we see more work from you again or any plans to expand on this in the future?
Thanks a lot! I am a big fan of the natural beauty of the wilderness and PCG graphs have really helped to quickly iterate through random arrangements to find one that I like.
I hope to continue sharing projects here more consistently! Sometimes I post things on my youtube channel (@permanentsunset).
This is absolutely gorgeous! Is that just the water pug-in you’re using? I’m working on a forest setting and would love some small creeks but the plug-in desteoys the landscape too much. Any advice or assets you could share? Fluid flux looks cool but has size limitations and I’m not looking to drop $350.
Cannot wait until we can get a RT PT; looks gorgeous.
Thanks! I’m not using any plugins for the water. It’s just a plane with a material shader driving the normals, refraction and some path traced absorption. It’s based on the basic water shaders that are found in the starter content. As for the assets, I made them all myself. I’m a big fan of photogrammetry and I live in the PNW so there are countless boulders and rocks at my disposal. I highly recommend Agisoft Metashape. It’s worth every penny .
Thanks! Me too. No matter how hard I may try, I can’t get lumen to match the ground truth path traced output yet.
Oh hell yes on the PNW! I’m in Spokane but get over to the West side as often as I can. I get a lot of great stuff in North Idaho and Montana as far as trees, rocks, landscape references and such.
I really want to make an open world-ish environment for a player to explore with little mountain streams, shallows, maybe some small falls. I haven’t used planes and shaders much on it, though, I can’t get them to “flow” just right. The landscape part I’m getting good at, even without PCG (although i love it). Something to keep me busy, I suppose.
