Laser Scan Mesh issues, how can I get a clean and precise mesh ? looking for ressources/help

Hi all,

I’m a beginner and followed many resources and tutorial pasts months. I get the overall workflow of RC to process set of scan done with a BLK360 and Photogrammetry images.

Acquiring data set, aligning, merging components, meshing, unwrap and texturing get me an interesting result. Saying that, I struggle to get a nice mesh from my Lasers Scans as the ones I see in the various tutorial. My mesh always end up with tons of imperfection and holes. Straight floor or walls end up with weird surfaces.

I’m confident with the scan quality and alignment themselves (registered and cleaned in Cyclone), but my guess is the meshing settings and mesh cleaning skills aren’t good enough. I’m super newbie in 3D mesh.

I’m looking for good ressources, tutorial going more deep into the meshing part from laser scan. I tried to replicate settings from various tutorial but my results are just 'meh".

Thanks a lot for your help and ideas !

Hi Martin,

the first issue can be with BLK360, as it is a simpler laser scan.

Did you try to create a model just from laser scan data? How it looks? Are the images allowed for meshing? What are your reconstruction settings?

The blk360 has a higher than normal noise amount than other scanners so I wouldn’t expect that you would get a great result. I do have a workflow suggestion though.

Use the scanner for alignment only, meaning, change the “enable meshing” and “texturing and coloring” to “disable” for all the scan inputs. This way your scale will be accurate (because of the scanner) and you only use the photos for meshing and texturing. Maybe this will create a smoother model as long as you had significant overlap and coverage.
