Laser + Drone components just don't merge

Hi everybody,

I have a laser scan and a drone images.

  • Laser scan was registered in Autodesk ReCap.
  • Drone component was aligned separately and imported into the RC project with laser data.

And these two components just don’t merge.

I tried all possible combinations and approaches that I’ve found on the forum and in videos:

  • turning ON/OFF georeferencing of inputs
  • importing laser with/without exact position and georeferencing
  • setting prior absolute pose to Unknown
  • tried sensor sensitivity from NORMAL to ULTRA
  • adding control points to both components (>3CPs)
  • locking/unlocking laser position
  • aligning and merging the components
  • aligning with different FEATURE SOURCE options
  • different combinations of all mentioned above

The only weird thing is that the control points are not visible in the laser component in 3d view (but CPs are visible in laser images). I don’t know, maybe its OK, it’s my first time with laser scan data.

Mesh from laser only scan builds without any problems. But I need to build geometry from laser + drone as laser lacks roof details.

I don’t know any more options to try, so i would very appreciate any help resolving this issue.

Hello @Arkon77
The problem is you have only one laser scan in your dataset. You need to have at least two laser scan position to be able to use the control points workflow.
I suppose the only way how to merge these components is that both need to be georeferenced and then you can use Merge georeferenced components setting in the Alignment settings.

Your advice about multiple scan points helped (as I was using only one laser scan point for adding Control Points). Really appreciate your help!

I think it would be great if in this case when the user is trying to add control point and he have data from only one laser scan position, the application will show notification about it, as I spend week figuring out the root of the problem.

As a result, the laser aligned with the drone data.

But the position of resulting component had changed despite:

  • importing laser data with “Exact” position and georeferencing turned OFF
  • setting prior absolute pose to all laser inputs to “Locked”
  • setting Lock pose for continue to “True” to all laser inputs

What can be the problem with this?

Thanks!

Hi,
I am glad you were able to solve the issue and thank you for the ideas.

Do you want to keep the coordinates from laser scan? If so, import scans as Exact, Georeferenced in Local system.
Import the images, select images in 1Ds view and set their Prior pose to unknown.
Check the Alignment settings, particularly Use camera priors for georeferencing (this should be set to Yes).
Align the data. If you need to use control points to merge your data, place them over both components and align again.

Lock pose for continue will keep only the relative pose, not the absolute one.

Hi,

Yes, laser scan have correct position and orientation that can not be moved. It was oriented manually in ReCap and exported in e57. Do I need to import laser data Georeferenced in this case?

Do i need to align laser + drone without Control Points, then add them and align again, or I can import CPs before first alignment of the laser scan with drone images? Or it doesn’t matter?

I noticed another strange behavior: the laser scan imports upside-down from time to time even with the same import settings.

And one more thing, is there a way to set ground plane (or orient the whole point cloud) using numeric values of the angle?

Thanks a lot!

Yes, in that case they should be imported as georeferenced in local coordinate system (as I wrote you before).

Regarding the alignment, if there is a proper overlap, the data will be aligned without control points. If not, the control points have to be used to merge the components.

I suppose this is related to not using georeferenced settings during data import.

Not directly, but there is a workaround:

  • go to SCENE 3D/TOOLS/Mesh Model/Info Panel
  • there you can set the wanted rotation directly
  • this will change the reconstruction region to the set angle
  • go to SCENE3D/TOOLS/Scene Alignment/Set Ground Plane and use the option Set Ground Plane by Reconstruction Region
  • this will rotate the model accordingly
