Laptop Recommendation - 2024

Brand new here. I have an old laptop (Lenovo W541) which is clearly unsuited for Unreal Engine development and playing games. It works, but poorly.

I have a very new, very powerful desktop that I usually use, but rarely, I do need to use a laptop when I travel, so I might as well bite the bullet and get a good one. I usually loathe laptops because I usually hate the keyboards and trackpads and small screens, so I never really invested in one.

My budget is variable between 2k USD and 4k USD. I’d rather not go past $4k if it can be helped. I assume that any laptop that’s suitable for Unreal Engine development will also be suitable for gaming and programming.

Any recommendations for Unreal Engine programming laptops?

$4k is a generous and quite a feasible budget.

That’s the crux. If you power up one of those monster laptops without a power supply and do the actual work, the battery will last 50 minutes and the “lap” part will roast the “top” part of your thighs.

Does this mean you’re fine lugging 12 pound brick around? Higher end laptops come with mechanical keyboards, quality 18" displays and trackpads have really improved in the recent years.

The questions is: are you looking for a desktop replacement at the travel destination or do you need to Unreal while you travel.

Also, a Windows OS based machine, right?
