If possible I definitely recommend you build the rig your self. You will easily save a couple of hundred bucks, and be able to get better parts for same amount then if you go with a gaming pc company.I been using my msi GT780 DXR for last few years, and will be needing to finally build a new Desktop pc for developing with Oculus Rift in July when v2 comes out. I been looking at various site ( Ibuypower,Newegg, etc) and a setup they want to charge over 1500+ for with a less powerful GPU , I can build myself , upgrade to a GTX 780 Ti and still be a few hundred less.
I’m curious why most people feel a laptop would not be a good idea, even a top-end one.
I can’t imagine why, for example, you would have any use in tuning the graphics up to the bleeding end and running at high FPS, when you could not expect to actually build your game at that standard and expect the average person to play it effectively.
Is there some other reason?
I have the Alienware 14 and it works quite fine. I can run all samples with decentish frame rates.
Is very known PC gamer mentality
I actually use the same, the Y510p with the dual 755ms when I’m at home. It works pretty well with the engine.
I use a laptop at home and the main thing I miss from being here at work is the multiple monitors. That and a laptop that performs similarly to a desktop tends to cost more.
You can hook multiple monitors up to a laptop easily. In fact the laptop itself functions as one of the monitors, so you can easily have even 3 screens to work with.
As to the cost, I think the improved productivity would be worth it. Having a powerful laptop as your workstation means you can do all your work while visiting a friend’s house, at a cafe or hotel, or even while on a plain/bus/train. Unless you’re a complete hermit, it can potentially add a massive amount of extra work time.
Also, I feel like that having a gaming notebook rather equivalent to its PC counterpart nowadays is not so expensive compared to 2/3 years ago, in particular if you’re not expecting to hit 120 FPS in every scenario.
