Landscape Studies

Inspired by all the landscape imagery people have been posting and teaching, I decided to dive in and start doing some of this myself as well. I’ll try and keep a blog of the various experiments and issues I ran across during development.

Landscape 001 [2015/05/31]:

In this scene, I was learning how to use splatmaps from world machine in combination with weight painting of paths in UE4. I also used speed tree here, except one of the trees in the foreground was pulled from another library which is noticeable by it’s more the usual planar masked meshes. For a sunday afternoon vignette, it turned out ok, but in the long run i’ll probably try and aim for more sub-surface scattering in the ground foliage and better placement of boulders/rocks.

Landscape 002 [2015/06/13]: Coastal Erosion

Biggest challenges here are the break water which still needs a lot of work, and the foreground foliage subsurface scattering / shadowing. Was pretty happy with the terrain output from the world machine network. Will probably put more time into this piece down the road, as it seems pretty ripe for some architecture.
