Landscape materials acting up (?)

I have set up an auto-material to fill the entire landcape. Works wonders. I have set up a layer blend node to get the auto (index 0) and then the rest, such as grass. When I paint the grass on top (max strength) the textures look like they are diluting into the auto material, losing color (blending into sand) and detail. If I set the grass to alpha blend instead of weight the details come back, but the texture turns into a dark blueish hue. I’m at a loss. Anyone got any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

I guess if I set both materials to advanced weight info into their layerinfo and then delete the auto underneath the grass it works, but it seems like a weird solution.
