Landscape LOD's

Anyone have some solutions on preserving sections of a terrain from the affects of LOD settings.

For example- I have a mountain silhouette I want to preserve and a valley below that is relatively flat. I want to go aggressive on the LODs for the valley, but those settings will destroy the look of my mountain peak at a distance.

Related question- I never realized you could use a material override on selected components. What kind of cost are we looking at? Currently I have all of my biomes crammed into one material, but love the idea of making versions that incorporated new textures.
