Kinect in Unreal Engine in 2020?

Hi folks!

First I hope this is the right category to ask for this. I am a newbie and I wanted to know what options are there when it comes to using Kinect inside Unreal Engine in 2020. I found out about Kinect 2 Unreal which seems to not be supported anymore. And I also found Neo Kinect which looks pretty decent but costs money. I would not mind paying for it, but much later on when I become a bit more proficient in UE.

Are there nay more options?
Thank you so much!

Hi… I am also trying to use a Kinect 2 through the Brekel MoCap software and integrate the animations via FBX files in Unreal. So far I can’t get the FBX to import to Unreal. Error message about Root Bone issues.

Did you ever find a solution?

@aYobF6shlI did you try opening the FBX file in some other DCC package? Unreal doesn’t like when there’s more than a single root object. The mesh is probably not parented to the skeleton, so you need to parent it. And anything else that’s also on the root level. Just leave the skeleton root as parent of everything.

@ygreq I’m the developer of the Neo Kinect plugin. It doesn’t make motion capture out of the box. It’s intended for runtime usage. But I think you can record the skeleton data from it if you move a skeleton and record its movements with the Take Recorder. Not sure, though.

Thanks for the response RVillani - I did get Kinect 2 to control my Unreal character - using Brekel Body 2 for motion capture and exporting FBX files. I have not tried working with Live Link via Brekel yet, and that may be faster.

But suffice to say it is completely workable to create motion capture animations and import them to Unreal where they can be targeted to either the Unreal Mannequin or any humanoid character that uses the Mannequin skeleton, or a rig therefrom.

Kinect 2 is a perfectly functional motion capture solution for Unreal.

You think so? Interesting.
Honestly, I never liked the jitterness and the fact that it gets crazy if you turn sideways or backwards to the sensor.
What are your thoughts on those?

Hello.

I see that it talks about Kinect here, I like that
I’ve been trying for days to find out if I can use Kinect for body tracking, you seem to be able to do it via software I don’t know.

Just a question, does it still work?
If so, does it only work on recordings or is it compatible with real-time capture, for virtual cameras with a meta-human?

If someone else faces a similar problem, it may help you. Now this plugin is in active development and works with all popular sensors Nuitrack - Real-time body tracking | Fab
