The first thing you probably read before opening my abnormal thread was the word, “UDK”. Yes, you read that correctly!
I have been using UDK for well over 5 years now, and I tried to transition to Unreal Engine 4 and I was way too heartbroken, so i thought I might as well just complete my current projects, and then try and move onto it. I hope the same principles apply with UDK when it comes to getting a license as they do with Unreal Engine 4. To sell a Game you need to purchase a license, and you aren’t required to pay any Loyalty until you make around £50,000 right?
I am currently working on a Horror game Project, and I have been making progression on this project for well over a year now, and I was wondering if Kickstarting this project would be a good idea.
I have begun the creation of it, in-fact I am nearly at an end with the Project, and Crowdfunding would really help me improve the game, reduce the overall cost of the game on release and would inevitably help me on my future to Adulthood, as I am only currently 18.
Do you guys think its a good idea? A thread with information regarding my game is yet to come, and I can ensure that you guys will be hyped for it! c:
UE4 and UDK have different licensing schemes, though if you want you can have the same licensing as UE4 using UDK, you just have to contact licensing and work that out.
The UDK licensing has it where you don’t pay any royalty until you have made $50,000 and then you only pay 25% royalty after that amount–note that’s in U.S. dollars
Kickstarter is tough, it’s highly likely you wouldn’t get enough interest to fund your project. Many successful ones already have some amount of interest due to the people and properties involved, so it can be a big challenge if you’re completely new and haven’t proven yourself. The other side of it is that you need to have something significant to show of the project that’s already completed and of high quality.
So If I contact the Licensing company, hopefully they can give me the same Royalty terms as those that you get with UE4, as I really can’t use it to save my life.
I have developed quite a large chunk of the game so far, so making a Trailer for it, imagery, etc. shouldn’t be too hard. I think I will progress on the game a tad bit more, and then I will consider the use of a Kickstarter, because as of now I need to add unique features that the user is going to enjoy, I can’t just stick some pages to some trees and call it Slender lol.
I don’t see that happening. The main reason is that UDK has costly middleware that UE4 doesn’t - Simplygon, Scaleform, Speedtree etc. Scaleform costs tens of thousands, Simplygon is like $100 a month, etc. The incredibly high royalty for UDK is not going to disappear because Epic is paying for that middleware. And Kickstarter money counts in thoss $50k, if memory serves me well.
You should really consider UE4. It’s basically a better, nicer, simpler UDK and the licensing terms are much, much, much better. 25% royalty was insane.
I believe that Epic has said that you can use the UE4 licensing terms with UDK if you want, back when UE4 first launched. While licensing the middleware is an issue, with UE4 it was more about making the source available which is why all that middleware isn’t there.
Oh thank god for that, I’d rather not pay most of my earnings to Unreal lol as much as I love them, because Kickstarter even has a 5% fee i’m pretty sure, so I would basically be losing 1/3 of my earnings with the Unreal and Kickstarter fee combined
I always Like to see what people are doing. coming up with. (Even if its not unreal or cryengine) if your to this point! it must be decent? and some thing that my inspire my self.
I have a long way to go to get just get to your point.
