A Japanese traditional hallway is not a single structure but often consists of a rōka, a wooden-floored passage, and an genkan, the entryway where shoes are removed. These spaces are separated by sliding partitions like shōji (translucent paper) and fusuma (opaque paper) that can be opened or removed to create larger or smaller rooms.
