KALAGAN SPACEPORT ENVIRONMENT

Hello everyone!

Today I want to share with you the next environment I will be working on. This new environment is going to be based on the Second Foundation book by Isaac Asimov more specifically in the Kalagan spaceport setting. I want this environment to be really calm and easygoing instead of the more grim and dark environments I usually make. I already have the initial blocking done and this week will be working on improving the blocking and modeling more assets so the scene feels more complete. Hope you like it!

Will wait to see the ultimate outcome from your effort, dedication, and innovation. Good luck!

WEEK 2

Hello everyone!

This week, I have made some adjustments to my scene blocking. I detailed the main ship a little bit more and modeled another smaller ship that helps with load and unload duties. I also modeled some shelves and cabinets for the little convenience store in the waiting room, signs and screens for flight display, and a couple more assets to fill up the scene. On the other hand, I configured a vertex painting material for the landscape and added some base and placeholder materials to it. For the next week, I would like to start doing Low, mid, and high poly for the required assets and keep modeling more assets for set dressing. Hope you like the updates for this week!

WEEK 3

Hello everyone!

This week the advancements are a little bit less noticeable than last week’s, however they are really important in the environment. One of the things I did was to do the low and high poly models for the important assets like the ships and also beveled the smaller assets like chair and everything else set dressing assets to give them a better finish. I modeled a couple more assets for the little convenience store, updated the skyline in the background and started working on trimsheet to texture the ship in the future. this week I would like to add some base colors to the scene and do UVs to the models. Hope you like it!!

WEEK 4

Hello everyone!

This week I did a lot of advancements with the trimsheet and UVs of the big ship in the scene, I also have the final mesh for the smaller ships ready for UVs and implementation of the trimsheets. This week I would like to UV and texture more assets l ike chairs and screens, and give initial tileable textures to the actual building. Here are the screenshots and hope you like them!!!

WEEK 5

Hello everyone!!

This week, I made a lot of advancements in textures in the environment. As you will see in the images, the waiting room is already textured, as well as some important assets like the chairs, plant pots, the smaller ships, the skyline in the background, and many others. This week, I aim to start doing some atlas textures for the screens and also begin adding decals in the scene for more detail. Also, configure the initial cinematics for the scene. I hope you like the progress!!!

WEEK 6

Hello everyone!!

This week I have made a lot of advancements in the texturing department. The little convenience store in the waiting room is almost finished, an now I am moving forward to modeling and texturing assets for the air side of the spaceport, since it is the most under developed part in the scene. I also want to start adding decals to give the scene a little bit more depth. This week I also aim to configure a material for the airport screens to switch automatically and add a blueprint so that the little cleaning bots move around the scene. Also I would like to start configuring the first iteration for cinematics. Hope you like the advancements made this week!!!

WEEK 7

Hello everyone!!

This week I have been working really hard on the scene, specially configuring media textures and materials for the screens to change their displays automatically during gameplay and cinematics. For this I used the media player functionality in unreal engine and then imported an external mp4 video made in davinci resolve to play on the screens, I also distorted the UV’s for the screens in maya for them to match the video size. I have also been working on adding decals to the scene, and changing the structure of the spaceport adding more round shapes so everything has a more cohesive shape language. I configured cinematic cameras for Animation and optimized the scene for performance. For this week I would like to finish set dressing and start adding characters to the scene o add more movement. Hope you like the update!!

WEEK 8

Hello everyone!!

This week I have been advancing a lot in the environment set dressing. The most important update is the addition of characters to the scene. For the characters I used some alien looking models from mixamo, mixed them up with a suit model manually in maya and then rigged it again in mixamo, downloaded the animations and imported everything in unreal. Since all the aliens use the same body model I modified the textures in photoshop and made color variations for them so the character look slightly different. Another important update in the scene is the implementation of splines that allow a mesh to follow the spline path automatically, I used this for the cleaning bots in the waiting room and the ships outside. Other minor include new models like a water fountain, candy and mint packs for the store, monitors for the store and counters, updated columns and water bottles. For this week I would love to add more cinematic shots and tweak the already existing ones. Hope you like the update!!

WEEK 9

Hello everyone!!

This week I have been adding a coupe more assets for set dressing like a postcard stand, a shop bag and blinking lights in the ship runway. On the other hand, I added sound cues to the scene so that when you simulate the level there are ambient sounds playing in the background. It was definitely interesting because I had never used sounds inside of UE before and I feel that I learnt a a lot from it. I also tweaked a little bit with the post process for the still shots and did some performance ad texture fixes. Hope you like the updates!!
