KaijuStory!!! Turn based Online 1v1 Multiplayer Mindgames

Hello people!

Been working on a game in Unreal Engine 5 for some time now together with a friend. The game is called KaijuStory and is a turn based 1v1 online multiplayer game which involves some mindgames, predicting the other players movement and tricking the opponent.

We’re currently looking for playtesters and if you are interested you can find and read more about the game over at Itch : https://kranbert.itch.io/kaijustory

Description
The game is called KaijuStory and is similar to the old classic game Battleships but with a little twist. Only one player has a “ship” which can move around, in this case it is an Agent sneaking around in a city trying to complete objectives while a Kaiju, giant monster like Godzilla, is trying to find the Agent by crushing the buildings in the city.

Features
The game features a grid which the Agent walks around completing objectives. It also features an ability system for making different actions
The Kaiju has abilities which mostly are ways to destroy the city: Smashing a building or creating a big stone block, which blocks the Agent from walking past it.
The Agent’s abilities are mostly movement based abilities to move around in different ways, but they also have a Decoy which can be used to trick the Kaiju.

Gameplay
So the gameplay is roughly like this:
The players take turns using abilities. Each turn the Agent moves toward the objectives located in different parts of the city, while the Kaiju on their turn decides where to smash or block. If the Kaiju lands a hit on the Agent, the Kaiju will win. If the Agent completes all of their objectives, the Agent wins.

Traces/alerts
If the Agent walks on buildings that have been smashed, the Kaiju will be alerted, or in other words they will leave a Trace. If the Agent completes an objective, this will also leave a trace or alert the Kaiju. This is what in my opinion makes the game fun. Since the Kaiju can’t see the Agent, but they can see the tracks they leave behind, the Kaiju will have to predict where the opponent is moving, counting how many steps they can move and more. But the Agent can use the Traces to their advantage and trick the Kaiju. As i mentioned before, the Agent has an ability which is a Decoy. This creates a “fake” Trace which can trick the Kaiju that the Agent is moving somewhere else or make the Kaiju think they are at two places at once(?)

I hope this concept sounds interesting to you, and if are eager to try the game out, head over to Itch.io at: https://kranbert.itch.io/kaijustory

Hello @Kranbert ! Welcome to posting with us here on the forums!

I always love seeing different takes on these styles of games. I was a little curious if you planned on releasing different types of kaiju or human units further into development. Maybe something that has a special ability to challenge the other player a little more?

Hello @The_M0ss_Man :waving_hand: And thank you!

I have a couple of ideas for making every game different when playing against someone. One idea is to have different Kaijus and Human units which have completely different playstyles. Kaijus that spawn “Kaijulings” that roam the city or a Kaiju which move on top of the houses and can only attack adjacent tiles. Human units could be different movement types, or use the environment in various ways. There is a lot of things you can do with this concept I think to make it very interesting.

Another idea I have is for players to have different loadouts, which gives them the option to customize their own character abilities by choosing from a list or unlocked abilities. This would make every player encounter even more unique and interesting.

The most important design rule I have for this game is that the players play with “open” cards. Players should know all of their opponent’s abilities, so that it is possible to predict and counter easier. If you play a match against someone and see a “pre-designed” Kaiju, they will probably know right away and think: “Ah, I know exactly what they do, so I should play like this”. For loadouts it would probably take some time to look at their opponent’s abilities and figure out a strategy for it hehe.
