This engine has sadly come to a point where it is borderline unuseable.
With 5.1.1 i can’t work for half an hour without at least 2-3 crashes.
Importing a 4k Landscape Heightmap - Crash!
Importing a MetaHuman - Crash!
Importing more than 5-6 assets from the Quixel Store with Nanite - Crash!
Using Virtual Textures - VRAM Leaks + Crash!
Browsing through the content browser - Crash!
It’s always about VRAM and this on a 3080TI with 12GB of VRAM. And this has nothing to do with any of my projects as this even happens in the blockout-templates provided by epic themselves. As soon as anything is rendered it’s always prone to crashing.
The only thing that helps? Switching from DX12 to Vulkan but since Epic fails to implement anything properly Vulkan has less features and worse performance than even DX11.
You guys wanna tell me that i had no troubles playing Cyberpunk from start to finish with the new Path-Traced Overdrive Mode but simply opening an EMPTY Editor Window can bring the entire System to it’s knees?
They seriously should stop working on this peace of crap and re-do the whole thing. Since 4.25-4.26 it has been a steady and steep decline in stability and useability. All new systems introduced in version 5 are flatout broken and nowhere near production ready.
I’ve already sent around 4GB of crash logs (based on the size of the crash folder) and have yet to see any response from anyone from Epic. The forums are full with crash reports and bug reports and almost none of them get any sort of response. YouTube is full of videos “How to fix crashing issues on UE4/UE5” but sadly none of them work. The engine is even ignoring engine overrides from the INI files.
Every single bug from the very first preview of version 5 is still present in the latest and “greatest” version 5.1.1 and some of them even date further back to the early version 4 days.
It’s a shame that this general purpose engine has become to a Fortnite only engine. The reason i say this? I’ve had a crash issue once in Fortnite (also DX12 related) and had a response from 3 different support guys in the timespan of an hour. Why is that? Because that’s what makes them almost all of their money because of the ingame shop. Everything else they are not interested in. I’m reporting crashes and bugs for months now and nobody cares.
But maybe thats a good thing, maybe less and less AAA devs will use this bad excuse of an engine and we will see some good performing PC games again in the future. All the latest releases with any version of this engine have either severe stuttering issues due to bad shader compilation implementation, crash issues or perform generally subpar.
In the last year or so even the once crappy Unity and Godot Engine have started to surpass this engine in stability and useability.
I and many others have no benefit at all from all the new features if not even the basic features work correctly. I even tried do disable Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps, Virtual Textures and it’s still the same thing. Not even basic checkboxes work, for example, i disabled Realtime Thumbnails in the Content Browser in hopes to somewhat reduce the crashing but guess what, that checkbox does nothing, all Thumbnails are still generated in realtime while scrolling to the browser.
Also the current system for shader compilation KILLS ssd’s. Creating an empty project creates ~5000 tiny shader compilation files and now multiply that for a bigger project. My biggest project generates over 93000 files on my C drive and those write cycles are really good for ssd’s as we all know.
