Hello,
I am new to Game dev and Unreal engine. Currently, I am taking some unreal courses from udemy and focussing on game programming.
I don’t know what to do after taking these courses.
Should I make different small games for my portfolio?
Also, what can I do to enter in game dev industry?
What skills should I have as a game dev programmer so that I can compete in the game dev industry and different companies/studios will like to hire me?
I am unable to think about what should I do after taking these courses.
Definitely work on the portfolio, that’s what employers looks at first. Then they will usually do a tech interview to ensure you know your stuff.
Keep in mind this is a very competitive industry, so it’s hard to get a job in it directly. You’ll probably have better luck doing an adjacent job working for a company that does virtual production or plugin development, then you’ll start seeing offers roll in for game development companies. Generally though, game dev doesn’t pay as much as some of the dryer stuff.
You could also work solo, making plugins and assets for the marketplace and working on indie games that you either sell or start a patreon for. It’s something you work up to a decent paycheck over time, but it’s more or less what you want to do rather than just what pays the bills.
