I am new (a few days experience) with unreal engine 5. i am facing 2 issues. I don’t know if they are linked.
- in landscape mode i am trying to build a new landscape from scratch. any item i am adding is grayed in the outliner with no action possible on it.
- a have a recurrent message regarding the need to build the light and a “lighting build failed” error message.
I have already spent a few hours on the forum reading messages and watching tutorials and i don’t find any solution.
Any solution here ? thanks to all
If you’re in landscape mode, you can’t select and adjust other objects in the outliner. Go back to edit mode first ( SHIFT 1 ).
Lighting build message is because you have one or more non-moveable lights in the scene. Just make the lights movable.

Hi. thanks so much for your answer. The election “issue” in landscape mode is solved.
But the lighting issue remains. I have set the directional light to movable. and still the process failed. Just to try i have withdrawn everything except a cube and when trying to build the light i have the same failure message. and same failure message with a cube and a point light set to movable. does that help to understand what i may be doing wrong ?
Unless you want to have static lighting ( which because you’re using UE5, I’m assume you don’t ), just change all the lights to moveable.
Directional, skylight, and any other point lights, spotlights etc…
thanks. light are set to movable. But it does not solve the issue. It seems the cause is somewhere else
Do you have the message ‘Lighting needs to be rebuilt for X actors’?
Or what?
The shades of the static meshes is not consistent with the source of light. If i move the source of light, it does not have any consequence on the shades. Then to “update” the process i launch “build lighting” and the window says “build lighting failed”.
when i add an other source of light there is immediately on the upper left corner a rd message say gin that the lighting needs to be rebuilt. it disappears when i set it to movable. so this part of the issue seems ok now. what about the other ?
Easiest way is to drag a new copy of the mesh into the level.
I’m not sure why the lighting won’t build, that can be quite complex.
first of all thanks so much for your time and help.
to answer your last input i have even erased all of them and tried with new ones : cubes, cylinders etc. same message.
It won’t help you build light, it will get rid of the weird shadows.
but does that mean i have no mean to make it work properly ?
You might need to log it as a new question.
There are MANY reasons why light won’t build.
First port of call would be the output log.

Did you get is solved? ClockworkOcean is giving you advise that has no relation to your issue which is items being greyed out in Outliner, and nothing to do with lighting. smh
