Issues working with Laser Scan Data - help!

Hi

I followed steps to create ordered .e57 laser scans from a XGrids L2 scanner.

I’m able to import the scans and I can faintly view the point cloud once I align images.

But I’m having issues merging the point clouds with photo assets. If I export a registration and then try to merge with photo registrations, I only get separate photo and point cloud components. (side question- how do you use control points between a laser scan point cloud and photo data set?)

& If I hit reconstruct without any photo assets, the sparse point cloud either disappears without a model:

or I get a reconstruction that looks like a mutant blob of the laser scans where I can partially make out an element of the scan.

Any help or idea of what’s going on here would be extremely appreciated

Thanks for your help!

Niko

Hello Niko,
as you created “fake” laser scan’s positions, you should import the point cloud as registered in local coordinate system. In your steps you have set it to Unregistered. Instead of that use Exact, georeferenced and local coordinate system.
Also, it is quite strange that some components work for you to create the model and some not, as the source point cloud is the same.
Can you check if you have intensity values in your point cloud. If so, what is their range? RealityCapture supports the range 0-1.
And to avoid the watertight mesh set the Remove marginal triangles to Enable. You can find this setting under MESH MODEL/Create Model/Settings/Mesh calculation.

To use the control point between images and laser scan data you need to use the same workflow as for the ordinary images, where you need to place the control points over at least three images and two/three LSPs. So, when you are creating the laser scans positions, you need to consider the overlap between the stations (to be able to find the same point on at least two LSPs).

Thank you for your response! Let me try what you outlined. I’ll update! Thanks again!

Can I view the intensity of the scans in RC? If so where? or do I need to do in Scene? Thanks

Hi

So I imported the scans following your recommendations and everything seemed to work out well.

The assets merged despite being wildly off. I decided to reconstruct and texture anyway just to see if it works. For some reason, im still getting a blob in reconstruction but that blob contained the scene inside of it. Any ideas?

Textured and zoomed inside the blob:

You can view the intensity, but not the intensity values. Open LSP in 2D view and push TAB.

You can just delete those large triangles. Select them and filter out.
You can also use Select large triangles option under SCENE 3D/TOOLS/Mesh Model/Advanced and filter them out.

Or you can use Cut by box tool to remove those triangles.
