Issues with root motion on Mixamo anims and custom models/characters

Hey all,

I’m having this issue where if I imported an animation from Mixamo (using the YBot as my skeleton), retarget it to my custom character (which is not from Mixamo but from DeviantArt) when it comes to enabling root motion nothing happens and it will just snap back to it’s original position.

I’m fairly new to Unreal and I’ve read countless other posts and watched videos on this and I’ve tried a few things which haven’t seemed to work:

  • Using just the default Y Bot Skeleton & animation (with no root bone) enabling root motion will have it stay in place but the pelvis/hips won’t move and if I set the root motion to loop the character will go up and then start doing the animation in a circle. Retargetting and enabling will have the character go sideways.

  • Adding a root bone to the Y Bot Skeleton and to the animation itself (via the blender plugin) but enabling root motion will just make it flip upside down or sideways or just make it go crazy.

  • Adjusting the IKRig for both characters and the IKTarget. Nothing works.


I’m new to Blender so my rig and naming convention is alright but from what I can see nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. Any sort of help would be really appreciated! I have a few animations that I want root motion to be enabled but just can’t for the life of me figure out how to resolve this.

I’ve also tried to upload my character onto Mixamo, exporting the selected anim (in this case hang to crouch) and importing that but nothing. Have tried exporting that anim through the Mixamo Blender plugin but nothing as well.

Really at a loss here :confused: need to figure out how to make root motion work for this.
