issues with reconstruction

 Hi there,

I’m having some problems with this cicada wing. It’s been painted with primer and marked. Point cloud is good, but RC keeps omitting the surface, keeping only the frame. I’ve had good success with wings before, so not sure what the problem is here. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Images attached are: Point cloud, reconstructed mesh, and one of my photos.

Looks like the pixel error margin is thicker than the width of the wing. so the thickness of the geo in those areas is so small that its throwing that data away
So the areas you are missing are thinner than the mean error value of the images, try adjusting your ‘max feature reprojection error’ value to something like 0.5
Also run out the geo on High detail.

I have had lots of issues like this when reconstructing leaves.

That’s really helpful! thanks, I’ll investigate tonight.

Cheers!

Did it help?

It’s certainly a tough object with the super thin wing tissue. But you say you’ve had luck before.

The areas also include some parts of the frame, so the thickness might not be the issue.

What puzzles me is that the “missing” areas are all but one irregularly cross-shaped. Looks like you painted them on, is that so?

What color did you use, if true? Is it possible that it’s so uniform that RC doesn’t find enough features?

Are you certain that the areas are actually missing or do they just have a significantly lower density?

Hi,

It helped to a degree, but not entirely. It was primed in flat grey, and yes, I drew some features on it to help, as well as spattered some different colours on another version.

Here’s a link to a previous scan, that came out fantastic. This is a much lager specimen, with thicker wings, so it’s probably correct that it’s due to the mean error value, and how thin the wing is.

Wow, that does look amazing! The wings are not textured though, right?

So did you check if the areas are actually holes or just less dense?

And if you drew the crosses on, then I would speculate that this is the cause…
