Issue using Cull Distance Volume UE4.21.2

I’m running engine version 4.21.2 and I’m trying to get the cull distance volume to work. I’ve created a new, default first person shooter project from the launcher. Placed some meshes NOT BRUSHES and put a cull distance volume around them with some values.

When I launch the game, the meshes disappear and never appear when I come close to them. Is this some kind of bug or am I doing something wrong?
