Issue/Problem Importing Ordered E57 Laser Scan

I’m trying to model my backyard using laser scanning. I have obtained an ordered E57 laser scan of the yard, which is comprised of 40 total scans. I am yet unable to register any of the scans in RC.

I tried following the advice on this pagehttps://support.capturingreality.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020653080-How-to-import-any-scan-data-to-RealityCapture-using-CloudCompare-and-Faro-Scene-How-to-create-ordered-point-cloud-from-unordered-

When looking at the point cloud in other programs it is apparent that there are some weird stray points causing the scan to have dimensions past 1000 m. I trimed all the stray points in CC and Recap leaving me with dimensions <400 m. I then put the two point clouds into FARO Scene, and created virtual scan locations. I imported the virtual scan locations as an ordered E57 into RC, but either the scans will not register or I recieve an error message specifing, ‘operation failed.’ Of note, I have not been able to successfully register the scans in Recap nor FARO Scene to create one cohessive cloud; I suspect that this has to do with how complex the scans are.

Any thoughts?

Hi, what kind of scanner are you using?

How many virtual scans did you crate in FARO Scene?

It is strange, that you are not able align those scans neither in ReCap or Faro. What overlaps do you have here?

The scanner is a FARO S350

There are 40 total virtual scans

Overlap averages around 30% - 35%, though there are a few individual percentages considerably below 30%.

If you are using FARO S350, the laser scans should be already ordered and you should be able to import them into RealityCapture without issues. In your case you don’t need to add virtual laser scans as you should have the original ones. Did you exported the scans as ordered? When you import the scans into CloudCompare, are you able to see TLS/GLB positions?
The overlap is quite small, what could cause alignment issues. Is it possible to align your scans manually in Faro Scene?

The scans have TLS/GLB positions.

I have tried to manually aligning the scans in FARO Scene, but registration always fails. There are some areas of my yard that do not have many flat surfaces; I think this could easily cause issues with alignment.

I have tried deleting the scan positions that I could not align in FARO Scene, and uploading afterward into RC using the same technique mentioned in the earlier support article: This however did not work, and would always result in the laser import into RC failing: I am given the message ‘operation failed.’

I’ll give deleting scans in CC a try, before registering in FARO scene, and exporting as an ordered cloud: I won’t be able to test this until later in the day.

I just atempted importing the scan files into RC after deleting difficult scans in CC and then importing and exporting out of FARO Scene. I was able to have the scans register in FARO Scene, however I still was unable to register the scans in RC.

HI, are you able to share those scans for testing?

I would gladly share the scans for testing, but I am unsure how I would do that: How would you prefer I send them to you?

Hi, I send you an invitation with link where you can upload your dataset.

Hi, thank you for your data.

I used these settings and I was able to import the laser scans:

Also, I was able to align those scans in RealityCapture:

Were you using those import settings?

I just tried those import settings: This is the result.

This was after reinstalling Reality Capture 1.2.

I finally got the model to register in Reality Capture. I was unaware that I needed to align images after importing scan data. Thank you for all of the help.
