Is there a way to use SetMaterial() on a wall while keeping proper building behavior?

Hi,

we’re trying to find a way to change the material of a wall dynamically with SetMaterial() in Verse, while still keeping normal Fortnite building behavior.

The important part is that players should be able to build on and around the wall, but they should not be able to place another build inside the exact same wall position.

We’ve already tried several approaches with props, collision, hidden walls and different building setups, but nothing has worked reliably so far.

The last solution we thought was working unfortunately turned out to only work because of a UEFN bug, so we’re basically back at zero again.

If anyone knows a reliable setup for this, we would really appreciate the help. At this point we’re running out of ideas.

Thanks!

Hello @saiLz ,
I’m not sure I fully understand the issue you’re experiencing, so here are a few questions that might help clarify the situation:

  1. Is the wall a normal Fortnite player-built wall, or is it a custom wall made from a prop or a mesh?

  2. When you say players should be able to build on and around the wall, do you mean they should be able to place floors, roofs, and adjacent walls normally?

  3. Is the main issue that players can place another build in the exact same position as the wall, or is there another problem you’re trying to solve?

Understanding these details might help us better understand the problem and find a possible solution.
If possible, could you share a screenshot or a short GIF showing the issue? That would also help us better understand the problem.

Hello, thanks for the reply.

  1. The wall is not a normal player-built Fortnite wall. It is a custom wall made from my own mesh / Building Prop, because I need to be able to change its material through Verse for a cosmetic skin system.

  2. Yes. Players should still be able to build normally around the custom wall — floors, roofs, ramps and adjacent walls should all work as usual.

  3. The main issue is specifically that players are able to place a player-built wall in the exact same building-grid position as the custom wall. I want the custom wall to occupy/block only that wall slot, just like a normal Fortnite wall would.

My intended setup is:

  • Custom wall remains visible and can have its material changed through Verse.
  • Players can build normally around it.
  • Players cannot place another wall directly inside/through the custom wall in the same grid slot.

I currently have a workaround using an additional invisible Building Prop as a blocker, but that means I need an extra blocker actor for every single custom wall. With many walls this becomes a lot of additional actors.

Ideally, I would like the custom Building Prop itself to block the corresponding player-building wall slot while still remaining usable as a skinnable prop.

I can also provide screenshots/GIFs showing the custom wall and what happens when a player tries to build in the same position.

Unfortunately you are not able to setmaterial() on a wall directly, because the moment you set “Register with Structural Grid” to TRUE it stops becoming a “creative_prop”. Unfortunately hacky workarounds are the way to go. I guess you could also try to use the cinematic sequence to apply a different material to an existing prop even with register with structural grid set to true.
Sorry that you didn’t get a really usefull solution.
