Is there a replacement to the state machine? (4.20.2)

Is there a replacement to the state machine in version 4.20.2?

I am using a tutorial written in 4.16, and the state machine is essential to the animation of the character. Is there a way to recreate it without paying £20 for a plugin that probably won’t work?
