Is Texture2D heightMap data of LandscapeComponent stored in separate file?

In Landscape Technical Guide it is described like this:

Each Landscape Component’s height data is stored in a single texture.

Is this texture just an object stored in the memory, or is it a resource on the drive, that I could access?

Why am I asking:
I’m wondering if it would be possible for multiple people to work on a single landscape by editing different components of the landscape. If separate resources on the drive represent data they’re using, this should be possible.
