Is Substrate Production Ready?

Hi! So I am currently at an early development stage of a CG production and I would love to use substrate. However it is currently “experimental” and therefore could be risky.

I am wondering if anyone knows the extent of the risk/bugs in substrate, and has it been used in a production before?

You don’t need to worry about these experimental labelings. There are many old essential plugins that everyone uses with the same label, it doesn’t necessarily mean it might be buggy.

If you’re worrying that it won’t be professional, you also shouldn’t use built-in tools with the same logic.

Okay I did some research on the specific plugin of question, apparently the only downside might be the risk of the support being cut off, which could be a pain in the future when you wanna update your project and that plugin is outdated.

Btw that was my opinion but there are many people online saying you shouldn’t use that for production

Hey,

I see your point, I have used a bunch of beta and experimental plugins before, the only difference here is that substrate is a complete overhaul of the material system. If we wanted to suddenly revert back to the “vanilla” system, It would be a nightmare.

On the other hand, the look of the show I am working on is very specific and will probably require more flexibility and quality in the shading which Substrate provides.

If the only downside is risk of support being cut off then I think it is risk free as I highly doubt Epic will abandon this system, it is likely to completely replace the vanilla system.

Thanks for your input!
