Is it true that we can't blend different material shading models with material layers?

Edit:

Just wanted to add that for long time developers out there this information may be the norm (understandably so) but for many of us newcomers it may not, especially for those of us coming from CG backgrounds, There’s no way we would’ve guessed it “require tons of extra G buffer storage” if no one pointed this out to us and I don’t mean spoon feeding don’t get me wrong. For us “Layered materials” translates to just that, blending any kind of materials together with mask or so on. All i’m saying is that it would be of great help if these limitations were somehow mentioned in the docs even a one sentence note would’ve helped in this case to avoid wasted time. I couldn’t find any such info, perhaps i missed it, if any i found an image in the docs which points to skin being blended with metal etc. maybe they are referring to the old subsurface model but still it was unintentionally deceptive which in turn hinted that we may be doing something wrong…I spent half a day testing out the materials with no results while browsing for answers before i posted here.

Note: I understand the multi-mesh approach, in my case i was trying something very specific on a single mesh which is why i asked.

But thanks again for your time guys.
