Hi! I started to make a new asset. But before I start Unreal Engine I have a question. Is it obligatory to use the newest version of Unreal Engine if I create an asset? May I use the 4.10 version of Unreal Engine? Thank you for your answers!
Hello Sipci1989,
You can use any of our versions. There are a few differences based off how you plan to use the asset however.
If you wish to release this asset on the Marketplace at some point, it would be added to the Marketplace at that particular version of the engine unless you update the asset to be compatible with newer versions, limiting what version the customers would be able to use the asset on.
If you run into any errors or bugs that were fixed in later versions, we won’t be making any bug fixes to older versions of the editor so you would either have to settle for the issue or update / integrate the change (if using a source built engine.)
It’s often standard practice for larger projects to pick one version and stay on that version until the project is complete, unless they find an error that is blocking them and is fixed in a newer version. Staying on the same version during a project can reduce the chance for compatibility issues from converting to a new version.
If you do plan to change versions, remember this: Always keep backups!
