I want to just make a start on game making. But my system is not so advanced. That’s why I want to use UE3. It’s not available here. I can use torrent or some other place to download, but if I make a game on it would it be legal?
If you mean UDK, yes it’s legal, I can’t remember if the licensing terms were changed to be the same as UE4 or if you still have to do the 25% royalty.
I don’t think it’s really all that much simpler though, not as much is exposed in Kismet as it is in Blueprints.
The full UE3 engine is still under a commercial license with an upfront cost (like $300k minimum) to use, so you cannot download that for free and use it. As darthviper says there is a separate version of UE3 called UDK which uses a similar licensing model to UE4 (i.e. no upfront cost, you pay Epic a percentage of your game’s revenue).
The main difference is that with UDK you don’t get source code access to the engine and no formal support from Epic, but you get the tools (Unrealscript, Kismet and the editor) needed to make your game.
It may actually not be possible to license UE3 at all any more, and this may also extend to UDK (hence why it is no longer available for download).
