Hey! We’re trying to render a rather complex scene, with subsurface scattering, hair shading, and many lights. Occasionally, our renders are failing with the following crash dump:

Does anyone have any experience with this, and any thoughts on what could be causing this and how it could be fixed?

It looks like GPU Memory Rising Issue

Checking through your log, there are signs to different causes here. The error line “DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG” aims at a possible timeout, where a frame render took to long to calculate, and the system resets your driver. On the other hand, you have “Fault Description: A shader instruction caused an MMU fault when accessing memory”, which suggests a fail from shader rendering itself. The log shows that rendering stopped during Path Tracing processing, with HairRayTracingGeometryUpdates:

So, I think we have two approaches here. First, we give the system an extended time window for rendering using a TDR delay. Then, a cache clear in your project, to get rid of any corrupted shader data, plus tinkering with Ray Tracing. And a driver refresh always helps. Let’s cover these, step by step:

  • To setup the TDR delay, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers. From there, add a DWORD (32-bit), named TdrDelay, and set it to 60 (Decimal). Then, another DWORD (32-bit), named TdrDdiDelay, and set it to 60 (Decimal). Save/apply, and restart your PC

  • Next, with UE closed, go to your project’s main directory, and delete folders DerivedDataCache, Intermediate, and Saved. Once complete, re-open your project, and allow shaders to fully recompile

  • Once that’s completed, I would experiment with cmdlets tied to Ray Tracing, disabling it’s effect in different types of assets, specially Hair. You can check all details in the UE doc here:

  • Finally, use DDU tool to clear up your current driver install, and get the latest version of the Studio drivers from nVidia, instead of the GameReady ones. These drivers are designed for engine work and heavy rendering, they are the most stable option for your work
