Integrating Realistic Concrete Materials in Unreal Engine for Construction Projects

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on a project where I’m trying to create realistic construction environments in Unreal Engine, and I’m focusing on making the concrete surfaces look as realistic as possible. I work as a concrete contractor in my day job, so I have a lot of real-world knowledge about concrete, but translating that into a game engine is a whole new challenge.

I’m looking for advice on how to achieve high-quality, realistic concrete textures and materials in Unreal Engine. I’ve worked with materials in the past, but I’m especially interested in how to make concrete look more authentic for construction-based environments, like driveways or patios. Any tips on improving the visual quality of concrete surfaces or resources to look into would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there @MichaelGardner! Welcome to the community! As mentioned by both Techlord and Wind, Quixel is an amazing source of high quality concrete textures, and since they were generated with photogrammetry, they are rather accurate on their own.

One technique to look into when working with concrete and making convincing environments in general is having some visible wear on it. As you’re aware in your field, even perfect pours have some inconsistencies and with your knowledge on the subject you can accurately create realistic damage (or lack there-of). Using custom decals can give you a good lever to break up repeating textures and make the scene look more lived in.
